A 20th-century Spanish artist and a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. His work is known for its strange, dreamlike imagery and impossible scenes, with symbolic motifs such as melting clocks recurring throughout his paintings.

Uranium and Atomica Melancholica Idyll / 1945

"Uranium and Atomica Melancholica Idyll" was painted by Dalí, then living in the United States, after he was profoundly shaken by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Objects combining several elements are fused across the canvas without order.

Black dominates the work, expressing a bleak world of death, destruction and fear. At the same time, Dalí paints another world beyond the black one, where a bright blue sky opens up — hope set against despair. Against that blue sky children play, and a creature walks slowly by: the prototype of the "space elephant" that recurs throughout Dalí's work. With its elongated legs attached to an elephant's body, it suggests that earthly power counts for nothing in outer space.

While the painting takes the form of Surrealist figuration based on the paranoiac-critical method, it also shows Dalí's growing interest in a scientific "mysticism" drawn from quantum theory and the atomic nucleus.

Reproduced as closely as possible to the American-made merchandise manufactured from the late 1980s through the mid 1990s.

Printed with the same American rubber process used at the time, on a mid-weight jersey body with the dry, slightly coarse hand feel unique to American bodies.

The techniques that give the body its worn-in character and the print its aged quality draw on the finishing methods INSONNIA has developed over the years.

Dyeing, printing and finishing are all carried out piece by piece by craftsmen in Japan.
